In this episode of Prairie Firelines, we step onto the fireline with Sam Gunn; an outdoor education specialist, four-time TREX participant, burn boss, and triathlete who is transforming how the next generation understands fire.
From burning alongside seasoned crews in Iowa to leading student groups in physically preparing fire guards, Sam shares how she successfully built a prescribed fire program from scratch and embedded it directly into the Saskatoon Public School Division. Working out of the Brightwater Science, Environmental and Indigenous Learning Centre, she offers a captivating look at how hands-on land stewardship and collaborations with Indigenous Elders help middle and high school students build a lifelong connection to the landscape.

Fire isn't something to fear on the landscape, it is actually essential to how the prairie breathes, grows  and thrives.

Together, they discuss how PBAs are established and the important role they play in addressing community needs such as reducing wildfire risk and restoring endangered prairie and tallgrass prairie ecosystems.

In September 2025, Cat hopped on a Zoom call with Dale Gross, a grassland ecologist with Saskatchewan Parks and one of the founding members of the CPPFE. Now, that conversation is finally being shared with the public!

In Part 2, Shanklin and Kody Wohlers (Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation) are on the drive home to Iowa from Saskatchewan after serving as trainers for the TREX. They talk to Renny Grilz (Meewasin) all about how it went and how they could improve for future TREX programs.
